Teacher's spend most of their time inside their classroom. It is only natural that we want to create a beautiful space. A space where it feels so comfortable you don't want to leave. A space that feels safe, welcoming and inspiring.
For a few months now, I've scrolled TikTok and Pinterest and noticed a trend. Boho themes with pastel rainbows galore! If that's your style then run with it. It's cute. If it's beyond your budget don't stress. We all can't afford the 'Pinterest Pretty' classroom space.
You also do not have to 'decorate' your room. Remember, that is much more than just your space. it is also a place where children need to engage in learning and not be distracted by the images on the walls.

I've begin my teaching year with a mostly a blank canvas. I like the chidren in my class to create their space with the things that are important at that time. Links to lessons, units of work and evidence of students learning. This all takes time to 'place' upon the walls. A 'Pinterest Pretty' classroom is beautiful to look at, but does it serve a purpose. What is the function of the posters, decor and other pretty things surrounding your students? Do the students refer back to the visuals surrounding them?
Key classroom 'decor' items that should probably be placed on the walls, include alphabet and numbers, classroom jobs, and other key visual prompts, like my "Stop Look and Listen' poster. These is one of the first and most important behaviour management techniques I implement.
The 'Pinterest Pretty' classrooms i'm seeing are quite feminine in design. I don't see many 'pins' or 'videos' of how male teachers create or decorate their classroom spaces. Women seem to be the strongest influencers. Is this a cause for concern? Does it matter to the children?
It's important to realise that our classrooms, as much as we spend so much time in them, they are for the children in our class. Be aware of cognitive overload. Be aware of distractions. Pay attention to the student's behaviour and if the walls surrrounding them are helping or hindering their learning.
